Cast-iron components and equipment is common in many production plants worldwide. Many customers think that welding repairs of cast-iron components is impossible and that degraded components must be replaced with new components. New cast-iron components are often long lead items which can create major costs related to loss of production. Welding in cast-iron applications is very challenging and require extensive metallurgical, mechanical and welding engineering knowledge. In this application a 150mm thick cast-iron component suffered from a 80mm deep fatigue crack. The picture shows the weld joint preparation prior to weld repair. Delivery time of a new component was 15 months with major loss of production as a direct result of the break down.
