Advanced orbital TIG welding repairs and cladding of components – life time extensions of critical components

A critical pipe component was degraded after 10 years of operation at a process plant. The customer had to either replace the component or develop an urgent repair solution to extend the life of the component.

Problem

Extensive degrading mechanisms like erosion and corrosion inside the component. Manufacturing of a new component was estimated to 14 months. If the component wasnt replaced or repaired it was not possible to operate the production plant.

Solution

An advanced weld repair and refurbishment solution was developed by Uddcomb. An orbital tig welding equipment was developed the the particular purpose. The degraded shaft inside the pipe component was overlay welded. After overlay welding and machining a new bearing could be fitted.

Outcome

1. No loss of production - the advanced weld repair concept was developed and finalized during the regular maintenance shutdown. 2. No need to invest in a new component with the corresponding waiting time. The weld repair extended the life of the component with approximatly 10 years.
