Testblocks & Test specimens – Lifetime Extension and NDE Verification of PWR Reactor

Description

European NPP with PWR technology needs to verify and extend the lifetime of its reactor. This requires a reliable NDT method to identify and characterize all potential manufacturing and operational-related defects in the reactor tank.

Solution

Uddcomb manufactured a replica of the PWR reactor tank, including embedded defects such as IGSCC (intergranular stress corrosion cracking), IDSCC (interdendritic stress corrosion cracking), lack of fusion, EDM notches, and other types of flaws. The customer and their NDT contractor utilized these testblocks to test and verify the detection, identification, and measurement of specific defect types.

Outcome

Uddcomb's testblocks provided the nuclear power plant with a reliable tool to ensure the effectiveness of their NDT methods. This enabled the plant to accurately identify and address defects, thereby supporting the safe extension of the reactor's operational life. The testblocks, developed under strict confidentiality and precise routines, ensured high-quality verification and compliance with industry standards.
